The Pollard and Philidas Canine Club was founded in Ferrybridge, West Yorkshire in 1961. As far as can be remembers the following founder members created the club.
Mr R Wilson (JP) Cairn Terriers, Mr Horace Higgins (Yorkshire terriers), Mr George spooner (ckcs & Cairn terriers) , Mrs Mary Higgins (Yorkshire Terriers), Mr Brown (Did Not Breed Dogs) Mrs Chambers , Mr & Mrs H & D Barker (Rough Collies and Shetland Sheepdogs)
In the days when the club started it was customary for another established club to nominate the new club to the Kennel Club for registration. Pollard and Philidas was nominated by Hemsworth Canine Society and inpartictlar the following members,
Mr E Hardy - Sunnybrook Wire Haired Terriers, Mr L Grifiths - Beechrise Yorkshire Terriers, Mr & Mrs H & D Barker - Sunnydairy Rough Collies and Shetland sheepdogs.
Mrs Chambers was the first Hon Secretary of the society for a period od around 6 months and then followed by Mr H Higgins part way through 1961,
Mr JL King was the originating chairman and sponsor of the club followed by Mr R Wilson (JP)
The first match meetings were held at the Magnet Public House, The square , Ferrybridge. The club then moved venues to The Low Club Knottingley West Yorkshire and then The town Club Normanton.
The club used to hold a sanction show on the Pollard bearings Fields each year which were a great success with judges such as the Great "Mr Stanley Dangerfield" and other well respected judges.
Lord King donated a silver cup for the Best In Show which was to be returned each year for the following best in show to hold for the coming year, Unfortunately the cup was not returned one year and was never seen again.
Over the passage of time the club has been renamed and the Pollard Canine Society and is the registered name with the kennel Club, The Logo is however still the same but was lost on the paper work until recently.
The club rosettes have always sported the logo
In recent times the club has had a number of new committees who have done their best to promote the continuance of the club. The club now has a website and facebook page, which can be accessed to gain news and updates on the club.
Finally the club is very very proud that one of its original founder members "Mrs D Barker" iwas still l associated with the club being its Patron , & President, at 97 years young this year.
Unfortunately it is with great sadness that our Doris passed away in 2016
THE CLUB WOULD LIKE TO THANK DORIS FOR 55 YEARS HELP AND SUPPORT THAT SHE GAVE FREELY , She will be very much missed .
